Art and Woodcraft

My early teenage years were spent around Sudbury ON region which, during the Fall season, left an impact on colour perception. I was also inspired by Surrealist and Nordic Impressionists.
Every painting begins with the ritual of cutting and building the stretcher, stretching and gessoing the canvas. As I contemplate the blank canvas, some leftover acrylic paint is scraped on with a palette knife. Meditating on marks and colour, the listening begins as one becomes a humble conduit. Using a palette knife and brush in the impasto manner imparts a sensuous visual tactility.
A passion for woodworking became Finewood Custom Woodworks. As every project was different, the “how to..?” question became an inspirational challenge for me to meet.

Artist Statement

Our perception is the sum result of our sensory sensitivity. All light, colour and matter are vibrations of energy which our receptors process. We are but conduits of this energy; of what Rick Rubin, author of The Creative act, would call the Universal Source. The most direct path to the Source is through nature. I found inspiration in the wildly coloured water lilies while canoeing Killarney Park and in the intense fiery colours of the sumac of Southern Ontario. Painted out of context and not botanically correct the intent is to allow for the expression of this universal energy. A critic recently described this body of work as the “nouveau impressionism”. The earlier more abstract work was inspired through meditation and is another manifestation of approaching the Source.
